I prefer the new style and would pay a little more for one all else being equal. If you see an S with too many date and inspector stampings it hurts their value and you can be pretty sure it was returned for a new bolt. Lot of early guns had bolt problems and when this occurred while Remington was still making the S, Remington would replace them with an S bolt and if it occurred while they were making the T Remington would put a T bolt in them. I have probably held over a hundred of these for sale through the years and it seemed like a lot of folks started calling them new style guns so I just kind of went that way so I refer to them as new or old style. For years I just said new or old style bolt. Grey, As far as the new and old style it is simply the bolt the new style is easier to insert and has a different firing pin. Your gun as described would not last 30 minutes in any of the shops around here. 1950 got one for $600 with a leupold on it i believe for $600 not long ago. I have not bought one in altered condition and probably won't buy another one period unless it is a very good deal on one in original condition. I have owned about thirty of them and only have four now. I really don't think people know these guns aren't original, the wood could not blind a mind that badly could it? One can sell one that has the front swivel stud placed so badly as to be in the plastic forend tip, have an inch removed from the butt, refinished, re-blued and the wrong bolt if it has a good piece of wood for more than one in original mint condition with a not so good piece of wood. The price is so much dependent on the wood. The two on Gunbroker are not worth near $1500 even with the box, IMO. $1500 wouldn't come close to touching one with the box and paperwork in near mint condition if it had just a hint of good wood, IME. I wouldn't be interested in buying it but would also give you my best estimate.ĭoc. If you want to sell it here on the classifieds at a fair price for both the seller and buyer if you would post pics You may get more help as to its value. If I was to list it on gunbroker I would start lower and has someone has said put a reserve on it. Said all of that to say if it is in the condition you have hinted at, unaltered and a decent piece of wood you can start at $1000-$1100. Neither of these have good wood and what I would call good wood on a 541 would not be good wood on many rifles.Īnyhow if you are the original owner you will know if yours is an older version, or has been altered these things suppose to detract from the value but a good piece of wood and/or the liberal use of the words mint and stupendous will blind many to obvious faults. As in all guns, good wood helps the value. But I have seen more than one Jaffed up one sell for more and recently. Neither are worth $1500 or near it in my opinion. The second one at $1559 is not in as good as condition and is the older style but appears from limited pics not to be Jaffed up either. And the $1598 gun is the more desirable newer version. If yours is better, then yours is better than 90%. The first one at $1598 appears not to be Jaffed up but has a few small issues. two are in the $1500 range but neither are $1599 but I think you are speaking of one of the two.
